Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung | Michael Stenger | 30 April 2005
A young pianist follows his path
The programme clearly shows the intention of the young artist: to present the late baroque (in Bach‘s 6th English Suite, with playful virtuosity, clarity, supple but never too playful or exaggerated) and to show its influence. Schmidt explores the choral transcriptions with delicate noblesse. He is never too straight-forward, but he seems to be a somehow typical German pianist... And in the Franck piece, he creates an impressive pianistic architecture, but never neglects the sensual element of this music as well. What surprises is – besides the pianistic access – his superior comprehension of the structures. He shows that not only pianistic superficiality counts these days.
